Be a Digital Changemaker
Producing digital content is hard. You’re never sure how folks will react, and even people operating at the highest levels of YouTube, podcast, and TikTok worlds have very real vulnerabilities around content production. We’re all human after all.
You should be good about publishing your content. You should shout it from the rooftops, but sometimes that attracts unwanted attention. Suddenly your social media comments are blowing up, but with offers for paid promotion of your post, show, or brand. Not the type of community driven content you’re trying to cultivate, and potentially even alienating to new folks engaging with you for the first time.
There’s nothing you can do about other people’s actions. Their comments may be annoying, but they’re probably not offensive or otherwise out of line with platform guidelines. The best you can do is not react to them.
You can, however, work to change the culture we all live in, including our digital culture. You can be a digital change-maker simple by being of service to others first. Instead of promoting your services, you can offer to do something, even for free, that will benefit someone specific, and doesn’t break your back.
If you’re a podcast editor, go on Facebook and offer to make free 1 minute trailers for folks. If you’re a designer, offer an easy to create design piece—like blog art or a YouTube thumbnail. Whatever superskill you have, whatever product you can push out better and faster than anyone else, offer that to someone. Keep it small, keep it contained, don’t give the bank away, but give something truly valuable that shows off your super skill.
Then sit back and wait...because you’re awesome and you’re skilled, and if you show that whole proving that you’re a good person people will line up to do business with you.
